How To Calculate Taxi Fare With Cabcharge
1. The Base Fare (The Meter)
The bulk of your cost comes from the standard Victorian taxi rates. In Melbourne, the meter calculates your fare based on:
Flagfall: A base fee just for starting the trip (usually between $4.50 and $7.80 depending on the time of day).
Distance/Time:

Surcharge: In Victoria, Cabcharge typically applies a 6% service fee on the total fare.
Why? This fee covers the cost of the hardware in the taxi and the “Cabcharge Plus” portal that allows companies to track every trip, manage digital receipts, and avoid manual reimbursements.
Note: If you use a regular personal credit or debit card on the same terminal, the surcharge is usually capped at 4%.
3. Additional Levies and Tolls
State Government Levy: Every taxi trip starting in Victoria includes a $1.20 Commercial Passenger Vehicle (CPV) Levy. This is a mandatory government charge.
Tolls: If your route takes you through CityLink or EastLink, the toll costs are added to the final meter fare.
Airport Fees: If you are picked up from the taxi rank at Melbourne Airport (Tullamarine), a rank fee (approx. $4.70) is added to the fare.
